At sixty-five minutes or so, this is a very generous documentary about the great Bobby Darin, the highlights being several extended clips of Bobby performing on various TV programs of the day, including his own variety show. I would have liked the voiceover narrator to be a little more subtle and introspective, instead of using a booming radio announcer-style voice, but this is a quibble. This DVD offers many little-seen clips of Bobby performing, a handful of interesting interviews, and overall a very good overview of Bobby’s entire musical and film career. And a brief aside for a moment: for those who think that Kevin Spacey didn’t look all that much like Bobby Darin in the recent Darin biopic “Beyond the Sea,” check out the footage here of Bobby later in his career, during the year-or-two period when he let his sideburns grow, put aside the tuxedos, and sang a lot of folk songs. It’s downright eerie how MUCH alike Darin and Spacey look in those scenes. In any event, I heartily recommend this DVD to hardcore Bobby Darin fans, as well as casual fans who want to learn a little more about the real person after seeing the Spacey film. It also doesn’t hurt that, for what you get, the price of this DVD can’t be beat.

I first saw this on PBS some years ago and have been looking for it ever since. This doc is beautifully put together and will leave you with the best kind of ache in your soul. BD was so young and so damn talented. Watching him glide about like he’s on wheels during the “Higher and Higher” segment is pure joy.

With any luck Frank Miller’s “Sin City” will inspire a recent genre of filmmaking – a literal union between filmmaking and the world of humorous books/graphic novels. I know, I know, there have been countless films inspired by the world of comical books which have attempted to recreate the chills and thrills. Not one of them – even the best (e,g,, Spiderman series, Tales from the Crypt, etc.) has been remotely as successful as the creative team that gives us this vivid, jarring, vision.

Rodriguez, Miller and company obviously keep themselves (and the cast) through painstaking paces to narrate every frame, every emotion emoted by an astounding array of live talent is instilled with the gritty, graphic hyperrealism of the world of Frank Miller. It is a breathtaking achievement which, alas, will go unnoticed and be underappreciated by many who don’t “derive” this world.

The cast is nothing short of remarkable: Mickey Rourke gives his finest performance since Barfly – maybe ever. Bruce Willis has never given a better performance than the retiring cop, Hartigan. Everyone keen is obviously relishing having the time of their lives. Outside of Shakespeare I can’t imagine anything currently more theatrically over-the-top and satisfying than being associated with Sin City.

For many the violence will be of too gory and graphic in nature (gorygraphic? ) . Others will devour the rough meander but also be appreciative of the often splendid beauty of so many of this film’s images. The final fable in the trilogy of stories that effect up the movie is shot with the cold and chill of winter bathed in a snow storm of such fine beauty that I don’t secure it difficult to say it is among the most comely images I’ve seen in any film. Ever.

While it’s probably a total cliche to say it by now, Sin City really is a wild thrill trot of a movie, and quite possibly the most bright thing that will hit theaters all year. Adapted by director Robert Rodriguez from Frank Miller’s graphic-novel series, it’s an energetic slab of neo-noir, complete with crooked characters, ambiguous morality, and deadly serious dialogue. For those who understanding the End Bill movies weren’t bizarre or violent enough, Sin City ought to seem like a stylish, action-packed gift from guy-movie heaven. It’s filled with negativity, outrageously over the-top bloodletting, and some of the blackest humor known to man, but it all works anyway. I even managed to forgive the incessant voice-over narration, normally a rather slothful plot, because it’s so oddly poignant and poetic. It’s not really that vast a deal anyway, because this movie is so impressive visually that the characters could thunder in gibberish and I’d probably peaceful be moved to give it at least three stars.

It should be famed correct off the bat that Sin City is not a movie for everyone, but if you’re the type who would like it you presumably know who you are. IF you like crime movies, especially those filled with action and atmosphere, you will almost certainly pick up a kick out of Sin City. If you buy lighter, more “socially redeeming” fare, you may aloof like it, or you may be overcome with bile filling your throat for most of its two-hour running time. It’s all a matter of how willing you are to bag what’s going on without asking too many nagging questions like “How exactly did Mickey Rourke unprejudiced occupy out ten armed riot cops with nothing more than his fists and a hatchet? ” or “is it really possible or even well-known to manually shuffle off a man’s scrotum? “. Everything about this movie is utterly outsized, from the themes to the characters to the action, but in the kill it’s a rousing success at what it intends to do, which is entertain. It’s precisely because this movie was so utterly attractive that I found myself unwilling to nitpick; you’ll probably be too busy having your senses assaulted to linger on any problems you may have with the movie. Nothing is more key in movies (or TV, or novels for that matter) than getting the viewer to suspend disbelief, to simply let go and be pleased what’s transpiring regardless of the plausibility level. Some of my approved movies are wildly unrealistic, but at some point when watching them I honest decided to go with it. Sin City is one such movie: I realized early on that the events unfolding onscreen bore diminutive to no resemblance to reality as presently constituted; I impartial didn’t care. I went to watch this movie with my wife (who is, to save it mildly, not a fan of sunless or violent movies), and she may have summed up the experience of watching it the best when she said simply “I was never bored.” That, ultimately, is the secret to Sin City’s success: it’s so interesting to peep that it’s hard to care about anything else.

As everyone (and probably their brothers) knows by now, Sin City was filmed using sincere actors against a black-and-white CGI background with some touches of color added for dramatic carry out. It may seem like a gimmick at first, but Sin City is all about bringing the viewer into a sort of parallel universe, so this unconventional design works perfectly. Sin City is a movie dealing with lives on the edge, and it conjures up a delightfully dim, grimy, and gritty atmosphere to go match the depravity of its subject matter. Weighty themes and over-the-top violence abound here, and it’s only fitting that the movie’s witness and feel should be so uniformly haunting. Consisting of three tangentially related stories occurring out of sequence, Sin City brings the viewer into an underworld populated by thieves, murderers, hookers, and dirty cops, and the morality is viewed entirely in shades of grey. In the Basin City of the movie, where the gracious guys are terrible and the dreadful guys are even worse, violence is often a virtue, or at the very least a prerequisite for survival. If there’s one redeeming value to Sin City’s cartoonish ultraviolence, it’s that it’s painfully definite that its recipients generally deserve it.

Anyway, if there’s one theme running through all of these stories, it’s that of redemption. The protagonist in each yarn (Bruce Willis’s Hartigan, Rourke’s Marv, and Clive Owen’s Dwight) is a most unlikely hero (although Hartigan is honest a regular cop and therefore not exactly unpleasant, whereas it’s obvious that Marv and Dwight are murderers), but each finds himself driven to acts of crude courage and sacrifice in order to survey justice done. Sin City portrays a kind of heroism not typically seen in movies (especially big-budget, sanitized Hollywood productions), one that comes from doing the lawful thing even when it’s nowhere advance being the easiest thing. Rourke’s Marv is probably the most memorable character, a hulking thug with a highly overdeveloped sense of vengeance who managed to madden some of my sympathy even as he carve a swath of unimaginable destruction through his enemies on his plot to avenging a murdered prostitute. Out of the legions of other figures in the movie, the mammoth Benicio Del Toro deserves some special mention as a comically malevolent bent cop who won’t shut up even after he meets his dejected waste.

Now, although I’ve gone on too long already, I’d feel remiss if I didn’t talk about Sin City’s staggering violence quotient. Yes, this an extremely graphic movie, and grand of the violence is downright disturbing to see (Elijah Wood’s character being slice up and fed to a wolf is a prominent example, even if worthy of the violence in that case was implied), but it’s objective as right that context is an considerable factor when considering impartial how offensive such bloodletting is. Now, for one thing, Sin City is meant to be a allotment of escapist cinema, so nothing that takes site onscreen should be taken too seriously anyway. After all, no one got offended during the scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail when King Arthur sever off the Gloomy Knight’s arms and legs; that scene was meant to be droll and it was. Perhaps more to the point, the violence here is so ludicrously over the top from the opening scene that it’s hard to imagine any rational person getting too upset. You have to fair go with it; if you’re the kind of person who makes it a point to be huffy and offended all the time you shouldn’t be seeing this movie anyway. ‘Nuff said

First of all, I can’t even believe this film was made and distributed to so many theaters. Don’t get me wrong– I think it may be one of the best movies I have ever seen, but it is SO much different than anything else I can hardly believe someone picked it up to produce and distribute.

The movie doesn’t know if it is a documentary, drama or musical, but somehow it pulls off being all three. The story is that of a Czech immigrant who works and exists only to pay for a surgery to correct in her son a genetic disease that will eventually render him blind. The acting in the entire film is flawless and it is cast perfectly. The camera angles and visuals were stunning and the soundtrack (by Bjork) is enchanting.

I must disagree with other reviewers on a couple of points. The first being that this is a “predictable story” of a character “too weak-willed to defend herself from the forces of ‘darkness’ enveloping her miserable life”. The will of Selma is incredible. Out of guilt from bringing her son into the world, knowing he will inherit the same blinding disease she has, and pure love Selma dedicates her life to saving money to pay for the surgery. She sacrifices everything save occasional viewings of musicals which provide her the sanity she needs to continue. Even when put to the ultimate test- death- she continues. The second point is that there are no happy scenes. Completely false. The sheer beauty of Selma’s mission and the musicals she produces in her head define love and happiness respectively. The end of the movie (I won’t spoil it for you) is sad but at the same time happy in that Bjork has found her piece after being wronged in so many ways.

The first 20 minutes are painfuly slow, but everything comes together. Wouldn’t recommend it to everyone, but if you are a fan of “art” films or Indies, definately watch it.

This is possibly the most depressing movie I’ve ever seen. It rips you apart over and over again, without any hint of a happy ending. It’s about as far from cliche Hollywood as can be, something Lars von Trier is known for. Bjork is an incredible, wonderful actress and I’d love to see her in a happier role, but she has sworn she will never be in another movie because of the emotional difficulties caused from her role in this film.

I am warning you, this movie will madden you, sadden you, and depress the hell out of you. I recommend it to audiences who appreciate art films. It is a musical (great way of challenging the sadness of the film), but mostly it is just a drama about losing everything you could possibly lose for the sake of love and compassion.

If you are a fan of the Modern Empire Records, DON’T choose the Re-Mixed Fan version… it’s a great dissappointment. There are added scenes in the movie, and some of the BEST lines are changed. Example: When Rex is leaving the store and says “Why don’t you all impartial travel away.” Yeah, he doesn’t say that in this version. I was very dissappointed when I saw this, b/c die-hard Empire fans DON’T want the best lines changed, so this really isn’t a “fan re-mix” b/c it changes stuff the fans Esteem!!! Definitely unprejudiced capture the regular DVD or VHS version… it’s worthy better as an unique, not a re-mix!!!!

This film got poor reviews…monotonous and simple. Why? Because it wasn’t aimed at film critics …at all. The film is an experiment in teen flicks along the lines of “The Breakfast Club” it chronicles the lives of a bunch of angsty, miserable, manic teens over the course of a single day, finding exclusive minute ways to divulge each of their stories. It definitely accomplishes this goal, using “Rex Manning Day” as the vehicle for delivering half a dozen life stories without telling a tiring, story. Granted, it’s doesn’t have the most unusual area, or Oscar caliber acting, but it the film does what it sets out to do, and for this reason, earned its cult following. Spy this film and you will salvage yourself quoting lines and recalling scenes. If you’re looking for a fun romp with a myth that will neither bore you, nor tax your mental reserves, this is a mountainous flick–lots of fun, quotable dialogue, and of course, tall music. Both Cochrane and Embry give memorable performances as the night manager, turned well meaning felon turned philosopher and the satisfied go lucky stoner respectively. The record line is a tad incongruous and disjointed and some of the characters are stereotypical in their attempts to atomize the stereotypes, but if you go in to this movie with the expectations that it’s unprejudiced going to be a fun flick, you’ll be jubilant.

Jack Griffin is a brilliant scientist who has some ideas that his peers think dangerous and unethical. Not one to be dissuaded, Griffin successfully experiments on himself, becoming the first human to be rendered invisible. Unfortunately, prolonged invisibility–or possibly the invisibility drug itself, as his peers had warned–begins to deteriorate Griffin’s mind, and he soon becomes a power-hungry killer bent on revenge.

Though rarely seen in the film due to the special effects and costuming demanded by the part, Claude Rains does a dynamic job in the role of Jack Griffin. His gravelly voice and vocal histrionics serve perfectly in delivering to the audience Griffin’s descent into emotional hell. And James Whale’s direction is as brilliant as ever, creating the appropriate mood and atmosphere as we follow a madman’s ravaging of the English countryside.

One of only four Horror films directed by James Whale for Universal, THE INVISIBLE MAN is a work that some historians and critics regard as a veiled allegory of the director’s own publically covert homosexuality. While FRANKENSTEIN and BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN also depict societal outcasts in a sympathetic light, the eponymous character in THE INVISIBLE MAN is a character in a situation that is most like Whale’s own–a respected genius in the public eye, but a person whose true self must remain invisible.

Even if you don’t buy that particular historical perspective, THE INVISIBLE MAN still works as an allegory of any societal pariah. We all have traits that we sometimes hide from others; we all have masks that we wear. And at the times when we dwell on the things we keep hidden behind those masks, we may feel just a little “invisible” to others. So in watching THE INVISIBLE MAN, Jack Griffin becomes a metaphor for our own private identities, and we care about what happens to him. As with many of Whale’s films, this pathos for the protagonist becomes a skeleton on which hangs the overall plot.

Compared to contemporary movies, the special effects in this film might seem a little dated. But the script is good, the directing is great, and the acting is superb. Anyone who enjoyes a well-crafted movie certainly won’t be disappointed.

Not too many years before this “talkie” was made, movie stars had to convey the essence of the story, with body langauge, without words, as it was the era of the silent film. In this film, the star would act with only his words, his voice, to convey this frightening character, as he was…well…invisible through 99% of the film. So who better then a stage actor, one with a voice that gets our attention, to better portray “The Invisible Man”.

The man with the voice and no body… the very distinguished Claude Rains(making his film debut). A voice that brought the brillant but megalomanical Dr. Griffen to life. Sometimes wrapped up in bandages, sometimes just a shirt, dancing around and taunting his victims, other times completely invisible, Rains is wonderful at scaring up a good time with this film. Not able to find a cure for himself, he goes insane and leaves a number of dead bodies in his wake.

So just how do you go about catching an invisible killer? Director James Whale(”Frankenstein”) makes the hunt fun. He includes great character actors like Una O’Connor who adds great comic relief as she runs around doing some great screams.

Even the police are humorous in their efforts to thwart the invisible one as he outfoxes them at nearly every turn. Other wonderful actors of the era included in the great cast are, Gloria Stuart(now famous again as the old Rose in James Cameron’s “Titanic”), and Henry Travers(”Clarence, the angel from “It’s A Wonderful Life”). The screenplay based on H.G Wells’ novel was given a fabulous treatment by R.C. Sherriff.

And just how does “The Invisible Man” LOOK on DVD?…He Looks fabulous! The film itself has quite a bit of scratches, but the picture is clear, the black and white images, sharp and bright, and the sound in Dolby Dig(2.0 mono) is great. All dialouge is crisp and clear in this 70 year old film. The DVD includes the very entertaining and insightful featurette, “Now You See Him: The Invisible Man Revealed”. It’s a lengthy look at everything about the film. The actors, the writer, the director, and best of all, how this technologically advanced film of the time, created all the wonderful special effects. Other features include commentary and production notes. The film may be viewed with English captions, and in Spanish and French languages(also with subtitles).

Get the popcorn ready.. Filmbuffs… add this one to your Monster Film Fest for Halloween…and Enjoy….Laurie

Released this drop, the “Christmas Sage” collector’s edition is really a 20th anniversary version of the classic. First, let me say I can’t own it’s been out for 20 years. I notion 12, at the most 15. Wow.

Briefly, for readers who may not be intimately acquainted with the film, I strongly befriend you to steal “A Christmas Sage” and create it a regular piece of your holiday routine. It will grow on you with each viewing and you’ll soon regain its one-liners making their device into your everyday vernacular. Which version should you glean? That’s why you’re reading this review.

The modern DVD release of “A Christmas Legend” had no extra features. Nothing. No commentaries, no interviews, no documentaries. Unprejudiced the movie. This was greatly disappointing, since I’m a immense fan and was involved in the making of the film, what the actors are doing now, etc. So naturally I was looking forward to this special edition.

Buy,Download, Or Stream A Christmas Story! Click Here

Well, I can’t say I’m too cheerful with the reissue.

1. The documentary is very uninformative. The one clear aspect of it is the simple fun of seeing the actors all grown up. Ralphie is 30 now, but looks about the same. Flick has changed more in his appearance and his career choices. (Career choices? You’ll have to glimpse that up yourself. It’s not on the DVD and I’m not about to end Christmas for you.) There unprejudiced isn’t that powerful to win about the movie from the special features. If you would like to know what Ralphie wanted for Christmas when he was 10, or what the worst Christmas explain Schwartz ever got was, then you’ll likely be absorbed. I wasn’t. What could’ve been an in-depth behold at the making of this low-budget masterpiece, intermingled with musings from the actors turned into a Nickelodeon-style “what’s your current color” type of Q&A session. What was particularly annoying was the graphics and sound effects that the editors added (e.g., if Ralphie says “my mom attach her foot down,” there’s a spacious crashing sound with a monolithic stone foot superimposed over him. Unbiased dead) . Bottom line, it’s safe for the serious fan who wants a gawk at the grown up kids, but beyond that it’s useless.

2. The other “special features” are even more lame. There’s a trivia challenge (yawn), a decoder game where you match the dialogue from the scene, a history of the daisy rider BB gun, and the fresh radio readings from Jean Shepherd (the narrator) . You might do these once, but it’s nothing worth buying the DVD for.

Buy,Download, Or Stream A Christmas Story! Click Here

3. The one knowing space is the commentary, and if there’s a reason to retract the special edition, it’s this. The director (Bob Clark) and Ralphie (Peter Billingsly) do provide some more insight into the making of the film, and if you’re the type that enjoys commentaries, you’ll salvage it’s worth it.

4. Lastly, I don’t contemplate the film was restored in any contrivance. We’re talking 20 years here. The film was glowing marked up and I was disappointed they didn’t go to any pain to fix it in the 20th anniversary edition. For those of you that don’t know (and don’t wretchedness, I’ll spare you the 1000 word treatise on the mechanics of film that another reviewer felt the need to part), artists go into the recent film and frame by frame they retract specks of dust and dirt, and in some cases they even add paint to touch up clear artifacts. This apparently didn’t occur in “A Christmas Yarn” and it badly needed it. This would’ve gone a long contrivance to befriend the value of this DVD station.

So what’s the bottom line? If you intensely worship this movie and have for years, then consume the DVD. It will be worth it. But if you’re on the fence, maybe you’ve already got the first impart of the DVD, maybe you throw it in during the holidays, then set your money. And if you’re honest getting into the movie and don’t yet possess a copy, well, you should probably gather the reissue since we’re only talking about a few dollars in notice disagreement.

This review applies mostly to readers who already have the first release and are considering getting the original version. If the features I mentioned appeal to you, then go for it. Otherwise, you might be better off fair sticking with the novel release and using your 20 bucks to win the “Christmas Vacation” reissue, which actually is worth it.

This is a must-see, completely charming, wonderfully acted (and I usually don’t like child actors), heart-warming without being too mushy, Holiday Season chronicle.

But they made the DVD in Pan&Scan (except the opening credits, which are in widescreen) . SHAME ON THE DVD PRODUCER!

The whole notion of DVDs was that there’s immense area for both widescreen and pan&scan versions. P&S (now called “Chunky Camouflage Format” — to earn you mediate it’s a righteous thing) makes movies witness like made-for-tv shows, with no vistas and too many closeups.

How about an un-modified version of this terrific movie?

Originally edited for US consumption and released under the title CREEPERS, the full-length version of Dario Argento’s masterwork reveals the design in his madness. Whereas the edited version was a fast-moving collage of half-baked themes which evoked nothing of any significance, PHENOMENA reinstates the crazy-quilt pacing, whereby dream-like passages surrender abruptly to episodes of screaming hysteria, all of which is primary to any appreciation of the film’s murky ambitions.

Romano Albani’s sumptuous cinematography transforms the breathtaking Swiss locations into a fairy-tale landscape where plain eruptions of violence disturb the illusion of tranquility, and Jennifer Connelly drifts through the story in a plot of near-hypnotic grace, allowing herself to become ensnared by the machinations of a deformed killer and his/her equally psychotic ‘guardian’. Suitable, the longer version is bogged down at times by lengthy dialogue scenes which acquire up the set, and the involvement of Donald Pleasence’s chimp is no less misguided than before (its final act of retribution crosses the line into absurdity), but the set-pieces are magnificently realised, and the final 20 minutes are as hair-raising as anything in Argento’s ouevre.

Dario Argento throws in all his trademarks in this horror/fantasy extravaganza.A slow crime account mixed with dream sequences, gore, plot of the art camerawork, maggots, fireflies, broken glass, running water, lovely young girls and a lustrous soundtrack. You name it, it`s all here!

Argento has made a lot of mediocre movies the new years, but this 1984 movie is a moral classic.

The film is presented in 1.66:1 with a DD 5.1 soundtrack. Both record and sound is apt, but nothing spesial.Anchor bay has also thrown in some extras, but nothing very tantalizing in my understanding. There is a insensible commentary with Argento and three of his collaborators in very broken english, a trailer, two music videos,a lousy slow the scenes segment, and a ridiculous Argento interview from a Joe Franklin explain. And don`t be fooled to acquire that the 28 minutes that is restored in this UNCUT and UNCENSORED version is gore.It is simply the plump european version, and all 28 minutes are humdrum tale and character building. No doubt that this reduce is remarkable better than the “Creepers” nick, though.

It is the feature itself that makes this disc a must-have.They simply don`t construct movies like this anymore! (Neither does Argento, unfortunately!)

I have always loved this movie. Definite, it’s a itsy-bitsy bit kooky, but Berry Gordy’s The Last Dragon unprejudiced about has it all: plenty of kung fu action, comedy, romance, spacious vintage mid-80s music, a exiguous bit of funk styling, and plenty of tributes to the ample Bruce Lee; it is also the only film I know of whose two main characters are known by only one name in right life. I actually saw this film twice in the theatre befriend in 1985, and I can say that of only a few movies. Taimak plays Leroy Green, better known around the Unusual York streets as Bruce Leroy for his impressive kung fu skills. His pursuit of the martial arts is a search for truth and mastery of self, and he is only one step away from acquiring “the glow,” a place of being wherein mind and body are one. His pursuit of a fresh and final “master” keeps getting sidetracked, however. Sho’nuff (Julius Carry III), a particularly evil dude who proclaims himself to be the Shogun of Harlem, is constantly provoking him and baiting him to fight. Then he finds himself the fated protector of star video jockey Laura Charles (Vanity), who is constantly being kidnapped and pressured into showing a distinct video on her reveal. Eddie Arkadian (Christopher Murney) is positive to develop a star of his untalented, Cindy Lauperized squeeze Angela (Faith Prince), and he will close at nothing to collect her video on the air. All of Leroy’s enemies, naturally enough, advance together for a slam-bam martial arts extravaganza accomplish.

Laura Charles naturally hastily develops some affection for her knight in flowing Asian robes, and a aesthetic darn innocent Leroy struggles to overcome his shyness in the ways of cherish. It makes for a rather sweet as well as silly budding relationship. There is ethnic humor scattered throughout the film, all of which I found comic and in no design offensive – by blueprint of example, there is the somewhat Asian fellow trying to act like Bruce Lee because he thinks that alone will fright away any opponents. The music is great; Debarge’s video for his hit song Rhythm of the Night gets prominent placement in the film, as does a rather illuminating performance by Vanity which seems a lot sillier now than it did 18 years ago. Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson contribute to the soundtrack, and Willie Hutch provides a couple of enormous tracks.

The best thing about The Last Dragon, though, has to be the martial arts. I know this was a somewhat cheesy martial arts film, but I aloof enjoyed all of the action. This is due in no little section to the fact that clips of Bruce Lee movies are shown at several points in the film, and a scene reminiscent of the tremendous melee that took spot tedious in Lee’s Enter the Dragon is a really nice touch. The whole thing with “the glow” was cartoonish in understanding and execution, yet it too was handsome wintry. I reflect The Last Dragon is impartial a grand, attractive film, but it is probably not for everyone. If you have no interest in martial arts, the romance and sometimes goofball comedy of the film may not be enough to satisfy you, but anyone who enjoys seeing everyone kung fu fighting should have a heck of a fun creep over the course of this somewhat underrated movie. It always leaves me feeling resplendent juiced up and clear about life, which is a radiant nice feeling to acquire away from any movie.

SHO’NUFF! THE SHOGUN……OF HARLEM!

This has got to be one of the funniest and cheesiest Kung Fu movies I have ever seen. However, don’t let that disuade you from looking into this title. I gaurantee you’ll have a blast watching it!

Martial Arts student Leroy Green is on a quest to gain an elusive power known as ‘The Glow’. However, in his search to gain the one Kung Fu Master who can order him this final level of Kung Fu greatness, Leroy must contend with the gross, considerable Shogun of Harlem, known as Sho’Nuff!! Aside from that, Leroy must also rescue a blooming singer from the clutches of an obsessed recount producer, who dreams of his no-talent wife having the spotlight! Now, Leroy has two foes to contend with, as well as strive to glean The Glow!

It sounds cheesy…but don’t let that fool you. This movie, quite surprisingly, is a ton of fun to glance! The action is actually attractive well-behaved, with some surprisingly decent special effects toward the waste. Julius J. Carry III is hilarious as Sho’nuff, the meanest, the prettiest, baddest mo’fo in all of Harlem! And there is no denying it…when ‘The Glow’ song begins to play later on in the movie, you will pick up yourself wanting to do karate kicks proper out of your seat!

My only gripe: For a DVD, the record quality could’ve been ALOT better. The sound is restored very nicely, but the relate suffers from shaded overtone, making scenes that rob area in dismal areas very difficult to observe. Other than that, the disc has two sides, one of which is Widescreen, the other Standard. There are a few extras, such as the theatrical trailer, and very miniature theatrical bios of Taimak(the main character) and Vanity.

With a substantial soundtrack…, featuring music from the early 80’s (such as Stevie Wonder and DeBarge) and the unusual track ‘The Glow’, crazy hijinks, enormous fighting sequences and decent special effects, any kung-fu fighting fan should indulge in this movie. Whether its the fighting, the comedy, or impartial the Shogun of Harlem, Sho’nuff himself, you should have a BLAST watching this movie. Definitely witness with a group of friends!

‘Bow down…and kiss my Mutter!’

Notice: At one point in the movie, we search for a very brief and early performance by one of today’s more accepted actors, William H. Macy!

R.O.D. (READ OR DIE) is quite an imaginative and delicious three-episode Japanese OAV (Fresh Inspiring Video) series that deftly mixes sci-fi, adventure, comedy, history and a esteem of rare books. Made in 2000, it’s plot against a marvelously detailed background of urban settings like Tokyo, Washington DC, and Fresh York, along with the massive Victorian-style (but secretly high-tech) British Library headquarters, as well as a diverse swiftly of retro-style aircraft and seacraft. Overall, it offers the kind of unusual, unpredictable and literate entertainment that caters to the restless tastes of the more discriminating anime fans in America.

The heroine is a 20-something woman named Yomiko Readman, a shocked, self-effacing bookworm who is a teacher and obsessive collector of rare books. She traipses about in a long skirt and overcoat, lugging a vast briefcase unhurried her on a wheeled cart everywhere she goes, even when chasing super-villains. She’s also a secret agent known as “The Paper” who has the astonishing power of turning any kind of paper product into a lethal weapon or protective barrier. One of the special thrills of this series is the diagram this talent is frail so often to ingenious finish in the course of the three episodes. When the Library of Congress is attacked and robbed by a renowned Japanese inventor cloned wait on to life, Yomiko is assigned by the British Library to retrieve the stolen books. The enemy is soon revealed to be noteworthy wider in scope and encompasses a host of other historical figures brought relieve to life, including a distinct well-known composer. World domination is not their aim but something noteworthy more deplorable.

The region is rather complex, but never wavers off track as the action moves from Tokyo to D.C. to Recent York (including a harrowing scene at a pre-9/11 World Trade Center) in the first episode alone, venturing to India in the second, and to a massive techno-fortress which rises out of the central Pacific Ocean in the third. The writing is consistently clever, the heroine relentlessly charming and the characters and multiple historical references always gripping. There’s also an define title sequence that’s the best seen in any anime since “Cowboy Bebop,” along with a jazzy early-’70s style-TV theme that gives it some added color. The release of all three episodes on one DVD is a welcome signal of the possible resurgence of the OAV format, which allows for limited-run series of various lengths like this one.

Read or Die is a breath of current air amid the anime releases in the United States: it manages to combine high quality on the technical side with enthralling, likeable characters and an appealing myth. First off, this is obviously a high-budget production: these three episodes (which is the complete Read or Die direct-to-video series) sport character designs which are fair, animation which is first-rate, and mammoth sound and music. Moreover, Manga, the studio releasing Read or Die in the US did a fabulous authoring job on the DVD, in disagreement to some of their releases (e.g., Macross II) . On the technical side, Read or Die simply screams quality.

Fortunately, that quality is matched by the quirky, likeable characters and the quirkier status. The heroine, Yomiko Readman, is a book-obsessed woman with the power to manipulate paper (which is far more absorbing than it may sound) . She is also a secret agent for the British Library. When cloned historical figures try to lift her newest book lift and slay the world, she is assigned to terminate them. Yomiko is the most keen heroine of the last several years of anime releases: she is a woman, not a girl; she is not overly sexualized; she is salubrious and strong without pride or arrogance.

The only proper flaw in Read or Die is that, because it’s only 3 episodes long, the unfamiliar cramped set is somewhat opaque. Moreover, many of the historical figures will not be familiar to a US audience, but this is a quibble, really. The demonstrate is not about the villains or their purposes, it is about Yomiko and hers.
